Countdown to the 200th Anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway 2025
The Journey Begins…
On the 27th September 1825, 195 years ago history was made. This date marks the opening of the Stockton Darlington Railway and the dawn of the railway passenger age. People, not just coal and heavy raw material, were able to travel quickly and efficiently by rail. This opened the opportunity to venture further to work, rest and play.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Darlington Borough Council and a wide range of partner groups and organisations are combining forces to embark on a spectacular celebration for the bicentenary in 2025.
The celebration of this incredible innovation that has transformed the way we live will include once in a lifetime opportunities to see early locomotives and experience first-hand the drama of live steam. Partners will work together to deliver a high-profile international conference and a spectacular series of outdoor theatre shows. There will even be exciting opportunities for our next generation of young inventors.
There is already an army of enthusiasts and volunteers working as part of the project through the Friends of Stockton & Darlington Railway, but there is plenty of scope for new ideas and new elements in the 2025 celebrations, so why not get involved.
