Townscape Map

84-86 Church Road

The property consists of two main buildings and two smaller buildings. The buildings began as a chapel/church in the mid 19th century and have been a retail unit (e.g. wallpaper)) since the middle of the 20th century. The main building to the rear, north elevation is of two storeys, painted brick(mortar) and a modern tiled gable roof pitched north-south.

Where visible (e.g. west and east elevations) there is English Garden Wall Bond. There is one chimney stack (no pots) but some ornamental work e.g. courses of different coloured/painted brick. The north elevation has one vehicle entrance with metal roller door. The north elevation also shows: six recessed two light, upvc windows with gothic style brick arches and shaped brick sills on first floor; a number of bricked up entrances and windows, plastic guttering and rainwater pipes. The east elevation has bricked-up windows on the ground floor and gothic style brick arched windows at first floor level. The two smaller buildings on West and South elevations have similar features.

The main building to the front has similar features: brick (E.G.W.B) and numerous bricked or blocked-up windows with brick arches and shaped brick sills on the west and east. elevations. The towers on the south elevation are three storey , they are of painted brick (mortar) with E.G.W.B. visible in places. There is a mixture of Lancet style and Romanesque style (with pilaster) windows (brick lintels) all bricked/blocked-up. The roof on each tower is hipped, slate , possibly having had finials. The doors appear to be refurbished : concrete architraves and metal shutters. The towers also show other decorative aspects principally some mini pilasters, mock mouldings with carvings and a chequer board pattern. A modern insert lies between the towers incorporating a large wooden bay with modern tile roof/canopy- this obscures/replaces earlier pilasters and Romanesque style windows. As a whole, the buildings have brick cornicing in a stone colour.
