74 Dovecot Street

The two storeys built in 1883 and currently apartments. Built as water board offices. Pitched slate roof with one brick chimney no pots visible. Ground floor has one single entrance on the corner of Dovecot/Russell Street. Wall 1(south) Brick and mortar with one header and three stretcher courses. Ground floor has four modern double glazed bottom hung window units with stone sills. Also two smaller narrower units, one window above the door. First floor has five double glazed bottom hung windows and one smaller narrower unit. All windows have decorative brick arches with stone sills and are recessed. Two small windows on the ground floor with stone decoration below the sill.

The first floor has brick pilasters between the windows and brick decoration under the sills which protrudes from the wall. The doorway is modern upvc and has stone decoration above brick arch. Noticeable stone string course above ground floor windows with inscription reading “Stockton & Middlesbrough Corporations Water Board”. A further stone course is just below the roofline. Modern plastic drainage and a TV aerial on the roof. On the roofline above the door is brick and stone decoration.

Wall 2(east) Brick and mortar with one header and three stretcher bonds. Ground floor has six window units in three pairs of varying size. These windows have stone sills and stone decoration below have brick arches with stone keystone. These recessed windows are all boarded up and painted black. On the first floor are four window units with stone sills forming part of a stone string course. These windows are modern double glazed upvc with brick ornament below and brick arches (slight actual curve) with stone keystone. Other features include on the ground floor the lower five brick courses protrude, the left side has brick/stone ornamentation next to the main entrance. On the first floor there is a brick pilaster between windows with brick and stone string coursing above the windows and below the guttering. The bricks used in the pilasters and below the window sills are different to those used in the structural wall. Also the bricks used in the arches appear a special type.
