7-8 Finkle Street

A large three storey brick building, supposedly constructed circa. 1666 (according to the current landlord) as a house with an alehouse to the rear, now used in its entirety as Green Dragon public house. The front elevation (facing Finkle Street) is faced with cut and dressed limestone, bonded with mortar in ashlar coursing. The eave is decorative cascade of three-stretcher brick. The rear and side elevations are almost entirely constructed of brick. There are some traces of earlier limestone ashlar are also visible.

The east side elevation, accessed via a passage adjoining No. 9 Finkle Street shows evidence of repeated modification in particular a sealed entrance which originally allowed access to the still extant outhouses, now disused. The front elevation comprises two single entrances (which are flush with the outer wall face indicative of its early construction date).

On the ground floor has two bay windows comprising six vertical sash windows. The first floor is the same as the ground floor. The second floor has two small horizontal sash dormers. The rear elevation, accessed via Green Dragon Yard, has two vertical sash windows with wooden sils and ornamental brick lintels.

The first floor is the same but without the lintels. Although the current function I the same, the side elevation in Green Dragon Yard comprises three separate buildings. Northern most building has two hinged windows on the ground floor, the right-hand-side is smaller. There is a hinged window on the first and second floor. There are no entrances to this building. There is extensive evidence of re-facing to covering sections of the ground and first floor which may hide earlier features.

The central building has a double entrance and two square windows to the ground floor, three vertical sash windows to the first and second floor with vertical brick lintels. The southern most building has two single entrances and three square windows to the ground level.

On the first level there are two vertical sash windows and three to the second level (the right hand side window is slightly smaller), both have wooden sills and brick lintels. There are several blocked windows evident by the remaining brick lintels. The roof of the building comprises of four levels of gable, of which the southern most side elevation is Green Dragon Yard has a noticeably decorative overhanging wooden eve, all of which is topped with pan-tile. There are four chimney stacks, the southern most stack associated with the front building has four pots, the northern most three, the others all have two. Drain pipes are all metal.
