Wellington Obelisk

Wellington Obelisk

The 127 foot Wellington obelisk can be seen towering over the Wynyard Estate as it has since 1827 when the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry had it erected in the Duke’s honour.

The Duke of Wellington and the Marquess of Londonderry had been companions-in-arms during many military ventures overseas in their younger days and the Duke was a regular visitor to Londonderry’s Wynyard Hall.

The foundation stone of the obelisk originally read ‘Wellington, friend of Londonderry’ but now simply reads ‘Wellington’ after Londonderry, disappointed not to be given a place in Wellington’s cabinet in 1828, had the other words removed!
