5-27 Norton Road

The building is brick and has a mixture of coursings The roof is a double ridge tiled roof which has been replaced ad hoc so a variety of tiles and colours are present. However from the aerial views there is only a single hipped roof at No 5-9 this appears to be due to the overall plot shape as Maxwell’s Corner precludes this extension.

There are about four rearward extensions which each cover two properties. These are at right angles to the main properties. They have a mixture of ridged and flat roofs and are probably kitchens and bathrooms. There are two rectangular chimneys with no pots. But it seems likely that many have been removed when roofs were replaced. There are 13-14 single entrance doors and only seven separate shops. Many doors lead to flats above the shops. On the ground floor there are 11 shop windows of various types most have shutters. The first and second floor windows follow a complex pattern. The pattern is a set of three sash, single sash, single sash, three sash, double, double, three sash, double, double, three sash, double, double, three sash, double, double, three sash, double and double. The windows all have stone sills and lintels. The brickwork has a double course of black bricks at mid window level on both floors and also at lintel level of each floor. There is ornamented brickwork at eaves level. At the rear of number 5-9 the second Ridge roof is not present but there is a single storey extension with a flat roof. There are windows on all floors but the size and type is not obvious. The end wall on Laing street shows clearly the size of the building and extensions. The main block Has three four paned sash windows on the first and second floors.

The Ground floor has a single door with light above. There is also an advertising Hoarding on the wall. The rear extension which appears to be part of the original build has two four paned sash windows at slightly lower levels than the main block and two windows that have been bricked up. All windows have stone sills with brick voussoir style lintels. All the buildings have a rear yard.
